The sandstorm proved fatal for the car’s 318 engine. Fine sand was sucked into the carburetor and engine bores, causing what Freiburger described as an "end-of-life experience" for the powerplant.
To gain critical ground clearance, the guys cranked up the front torsion bars to their absolute limits and used re-arched leaf springs and lift blocks in the rear.
Before this episode, the Orc was resurrected with a junk-yard 360 engine to get it running. However, after being pushed to its absolute limits—including a brutal beating in a sandstorm—the engine gave up the ghost. Rather than treating the Challenger with kid gloves, the duo decided to double down on the car's Mad-Max-meets-monster-truck persona. Realizing its drag racing days were over, Freiburger and Dulcich decided to take the car in a completely radical direction on Roadkill Garage . The Mad Max-Style Transformation
Although the Off‑Road Challenger’s 318‑cubic‑inch engine did not survive the sandstorm, that was not the end of the car’s story. In a later episode titled “Low‑Buck Revival: The Off‑Road Challenger Lives Again!” (Season 4, Episode 5), Freiburger and Dulcich return to the project. They install a fresh 360ci powerplant and a 727 transmission sourced from a $1,500 parts truck, breathing new life into the battered E‑body.
The car used in this episode was originally a mundane dirt-track racer that had previously appeared in (Episodes 54 and 56).
The star of this episode is a 1970 Dodge Challenger that had already lived a hard life before Freiburger and Dulcich got their hands on it.
