The Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM) is the graphical soul of the ASA 5505. Unlike modern cloud-managed firewalls, the ASA 5505 hosts its management software directly on its internal flash memory.

Because the ASA 5505 is an older device, its matching ASDM versions rely heavily on specific Java editions. Java 8 (JRE 1.8) is generally the most stable choice.
If you do not have a service contract, you cannot legally download the software from Cisco. This drives many users to third-party "freeware" sites, which is a significant security risk (malware risk).
