The first season had a troubled production path. The pilot was shot in Los Angeles in November 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic shut down production. Filming resumed in the spring of 2021, moving to Vancouver, Canada, to shoot the rest of the ten episodes, wrapping in early October. Most of the wilderness interiors were filmed on massive soundstages at Burnaby’s Bridge Studios, while the exterior plane crash and cabin were located at Panther Paintball Park in Surrey, BC. The snowy opening sequence of the "Pit Girl" was filmed on location at Mammoth Mountain, California.

Season 1 expertly toes the line. Is the wilderness a malevolent force demanding sacrifice? Or is mass trauma, starvation, and adolescent groupthink creating its own mythology? The pilot’s cold open—a girl falls into a pit of spikes, then is ritualistically butchered and eaten by masked figures—promises savagery, but the season wisely delays full cannibalism, focusing instead on the psychological erosion: Lottie’s blood offerings, the seance, the whispered “spill the blood, let the darkness set us free.”

They have built families and careers, but they share a collective trauma so profound that they have sworn a blood oath to never speak of what really happened out there.
In 2021, Showtime premiered Yellowjackets , a genre-bending series that quickly transformed from a word-of-mouth sleeper hit into a full-blown cultural phenomenon. Part survivalist horror, part nineties nostalgia trip, and part psychological mystery, the first season captured audiences with its unrelenting tension and complex character studies. The show asks a deeply unsettling question: how far will civilized people go when stripped of society's rules? By examining the trauma of a tragic plane crash through a dual-timeline structure, Season 1 delivers a masterclass in tension, trauma, and team dynamics. The Dual-Timeline Narrative Structure
